Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to permanently reduce unwanted hair — but preparation is what separates great results from disappointing ones. Follow these steps before your appointment at BioRevive Med & Wellness Spa in Newport Beach and you'll get the most out of every session.
Shave 12–24 hours before. Avoid sun and tanning for 4 weeks. Stop waxing or threading for 4–6 weeks. Skip retinoids and exfoliants 3–5 days out. Arrive with clean, product-free skin.
Everything below explains exactly why each step matters — and what happens if you skip it.The complete pre-treatment checklist
This is the single most important prep step. Shaving removes surface hair so the laser energy goes directly to the follicle — where it needs to be. If you arrive with unshaved hair, the laser heats the hair shaft above the skin, which reduces efficacy and increases discomfort. Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams — those remove the root entirely, leaving the laser nothing to target.
Tanned or sun-exposed skin contains more melanin. Since the laser targets melanin to find the follicle, treating tanned skin increases the risk of the laser targeting the skin itself — which can cause hyperpigmentation, burns, or blistering. This applies equally to natural sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner products. If you have a vacation coming up, schedule your sessions before or well after.
Waxing and threading pull the hair out from the root — the same root the laser needs to disable. If the follicle is empty, the laser can't damage it. You need at least one full hair growth cycle (4–6 weeks) between your last wax and your first laser session. Between sessions, shaving only.
Retinol, tretinoin, AHAs (glycolic, lactic), BHAs (salicylic), and physical exfoliants thin and sensitize the skin barrier. Using them close to a laser session significantly increases the risk of irritation, redness, and post-treatment adverse reactions. Stop these products 3–5 days before your appointment and resume 5–7 days after.
On the day of your appointment, arrive without lotions, oils, deodorant (for underarm treatments), or makeup on the treatment area. Products on the skin surface can interfere with laser contact and may cause uneven energy distribution. A quick shower beforehand is perfect — just don't apply anything after.
Certain medications increase photosensitivity and are contraindicated with laser treatment. These include some antibiotics (especially tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones), St. John's Wort, some acne medications (isotretinoin / Accutane), and certain blood thinners. Your provider at BioRevive will review your full medication list at your consultation and let you know if any adjustments are needed before starting treatment.

Prep timeline by treatment area
Different treatment areas have slightly different timing and shaving requirements. Here's what to know for the most common areas we treat at BioRevive:
What to expect on treatment day
Your appointment at BioRevive will begin with a brief skin check — your provider will assess the treatment area, confirm your prep, and select the appropriate laser settings for your skin tone and hair type. We use medical-grade laser systems calibrated for all skin tones, including deeper complexions that older diode systems couldn't safely treat.
During the session you'll feel a series of quick pulses — most patients describe it as a rubber band snap or a warm flick. The built-in cooling system on our device minimizes discomfort in real time. Treatment time ranges from a few minutes (upper lip) to 45–60 minutes (full legs).
After your session — how to care for treated skin
- Apply SPF 30+ daily — treated skin is more photosensitive for 1–2 weeks after each session
- Avoid heat — no saunas, hot tubs, or intense exercise for 48 hours
- Skip deodorant for 24–48 hours after underarm treatment
- Don't pick or scratch — shedding of treated hairs (which looks like stubble pushing out) is normal over 1–3 weeks post-session
- Moisturize with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion once redness has settled (usually after 24 hours)
- Resume retinoids after 5–7 days once your skin feels fully settled
- Keep shaving between sessions as needed — shaving is fine; waxing and threading are not
How many sessions will you need?
Laser hair removal works by targeting hair in its active growth phase (anagen). Because only 15–30% of hair follicles are in this phase at any one time, multiple sessions are required to catch each follicle at the right moment.
Most patients at BioRevive need 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–8 weeks apart depending on the area. After a full series, the majority of patients experience 80–95% permanent hair reduction. Annual maintenance sessions keep results long-term.
