Before-and-after photos are the reason most people book a skin tightening treatment, and they are also the reason a lot of people end up disappointed. Not because the treatments do not work, but because photographs compress a slow biological process into two frames and drop everything that happened in between — including the timeline, the number of sessions, and how much laxity the person started with.
This page covers what XERF results actually look like, when they appear, what makes them better or worse, and how to judge whether a before-and-after you are looking at is telling you the truth.
Short answer. XERF produces a modest visible tightening immediately after treatment, then a gradual, more durable firming over two to three months as new collagen forms. Results are subtle rather than dramatic — a cleaner jawline, a smoother neck, skin that sits tighter. It is not a facelift and honest before-and-afters will not look like one. The XERF results timeline
Radiofrequency tightening works in two distinct phases, and conflating them is where most confusion about results comes from.
Immediate contraction
Heat causes the collagen you already have to contract, producing a visible but modest tightening straight after the session. Skin may be warm and slightly pink for a short while. This phase is real but partly temporary — it is not your final result, and any photograph taken at this moment will overstate what you keep.
The quiet stretch
The immediate effect settles and new collagen has not formed yet, so this is the period where people most often conclude the treatment did not work. Nothing has gone wrong. The biology simply has not caught up.
First genuine change
New collagen begins to register visibly. This is usually when clients notice something themselves rather than being told to look for it — most often along the jawline, or in how makeup sits on the neck.
Peak result
Collagen remodelling reaches its fullest expression. This is when honest before-and-after photographs should be taken, and it is the point at which your provider assesses whether further sessions would add anything.
Gradual decline
You keep aging. The collagen you built degrades on the same curve as the rest, which is why maintenance sessions exist. How long an individual holds a result depends on age, sun exposure, starting skin quality and genetics.
The practical consequence: a single session photographed at two weeks will look like a failure, and the same session photographed at three months will look like a success. Both photographs are honest. Only one of them is informative.
How to read any before-and-after honestly
This applies to every clinic's photos, including ours. If a pair of images fails these checks, it is not necessarily dishonest — but you cannot learn anything from it.
Warning signs in a before-and-after pair
- The lighting changed. Softer, more frontal light on the "after" flattens shadow and fakes a tightening effect entirely on its own. Shadow direction should be identical in both frames.
- The chin position moved. Tipping the chin up a few degrees tightens the neckline of any human being alive. Look at ear position relative to the shoulders.
- The expression changed. A relaxed jaw in the "before" and a slightly engaged one in the "after" is a free result. Both should be neutral.
- No timepoint is stated. "After" is meaningless. "12 weeks post third session" is information.
- Makeup or hair differs. Contouring along the jaw does visibly what the device is being credited for.
- The result looks like a facelift. Non-invasive radiofrequency produces refinement, not repositioning. A dramatic lift in a no-downtime treatment photo means something other than the device is responsible.
The corollary is worth stating plainly: a modest, well-controlled before-and-after is more trustworthy than a spectacular one. If a clinic's gallery is uniformly dramatic, the selection is doing work the device is not.
What makes results better or worse
Starting laxity
Mild to moderate looseness responds best. Skin that needs repositioning rather than firming will show the least change, because the device cannot solve that category of problem.
Age and collagen reserve
Younger skin has more capacity to produce new collagen, so it generally responds faster and holds longer. This does not make the treatment pointless later, it makes the series longer.
Sun exposure
Continued unprotected UV exposure degrades the collagen you just paid to build. This is the single largest factor you personally control, and it matters more than any product you apply.
Completing the series
Most plans are a short series, not one session. Stopping halfway produces roughly half the result, which is the most common reason a client's outcome underperforms the gallery.
Smoking and hydration
Smoking measurably impairs collagen synthesis. Dehydrated skin also reads as laxer than it is, which flatters the "before" and undersells the result.
Correct diagnosis
If the real problem is volume loss or pigment, tightening will produce a technically successful treatment and a disappointed client. This is what consultation is for.
What XERF results will not look like
Being specific about the ceiling is more useful than another paragraph about collagen.
| If your concern is | XERF will | You may actually need |
|---|---|---|
| Mild jawline softening | Help — this is its core use | — |
| Loose neck skin, moderate | Help, over a series | — |
| Heavy jowls, significant sagging | Not meaningfully change it | Surgical consultation |
| Flattened, hollow cheeks | Not restore shape | Volume replacement |
| Sun spots, uneven tone | Not address pigment | Cool Peel CO₂ or IPL |
| Acne scarring, large pores | Not resurface texture | Morpheus8 |
| Deep static wrinkles | Soften only marginally | Neuromodulator or resurfacing |
A provider who tells you XERF handles all seven rows is selling, not assessing. See how XERF actually works for the mechanism behind where the ceiling sits.
Why we photograph at your first visit
Skin firmness changes too slowly to perceive in a mirror you look at every morning. Your brain updates its baseline continuously, so by week eight you are comparing today's face to last week's, not to the one that walked in.
This cuts both ways. Some clients conclude nothing happened when the photographs show clear change. Others credit the treatment with more than it did. A standardised baseline image — same lighting, same distance, same neutral expression — is the only way either of you finds out what actually occurred.

Frequently asked questions
How long until I see XERF results?
Some tightening is visible the same day because heat contracts existing collagen, but that portion is partly temporary. Genuine change typically registers at four to six weeks and peaks around two to three months as new collagen forms. The weeks between those points are the quiet stretch where people wrongly conclude it did not work.
How dramatic are XERF before and after results?
Modest and refining rather than transformative. A cleaner jawline border, a smoother neck, skin that sits tighter. Non-invasive radiofrequency firms tissue; it does not reposition it. Any no-downtime treatment photographed with facelift-scale change should be questioned.
How many sessions before results show?
Most face and neck plans run as a short series spaced a few weeks apart, and the result builds cumulatively. A single session produces a partial result. Stopping midway through a planned series is the most common reason an individual outcome falls short of a gallery.
How long do XERF results last?
The collagen you build degrades on the same curve as the rest of your skin, so results decline gradually rather than ending abruptly. Most people maintain with periodic sessions instead of repeating a full course. Duration varies with age, sun exposure, starting skin quality and genetics.
Why do some people see no results from XERF?
The usual reasons are an incomplete series, a mismatch between the treatment and the actual concern — volume loss or pigment rather than laxity — or a degree of sagging beyond what non-invasive tightening can address. Assessing that honestly before you book is what a consultation is for.
Can I see XERF before and after photos at the consultation?
Yes. We can show relevant cases in person, including ones where the outcome was limited, which is often more useful than the strongest examples. Bring photographs of yourself from a few years ago if you have them — they are frequently better evidence of what has changed than anything a mirror tells you.
Are before and after photos retouched?
They should never be. Ask any clinic directly whether images are retouched, whether lighting and camera position are standardised, and what timepoint the "after" was taken at. A clinic that cannot answer those three questions has told you something.
